We are pleased to announce the publication of a new chapter in the Book Bubaline Theriogenology: Non-infectious Causes of Bubaline Abortions
by A. Kumar, S. Kumar, M. Singh, P. P. Gokuldas and P. Kumar
Read the chapter.

"Buffaloes are of high economic importance particularly for Asian smallholder farmers. Pregnancy losses due to early embryonic deaths or abortion are a major constraint in the successful completion of gestation and consequent profitable milk production in buffaloes."

Dear Colleagues

Yesterday was a very amazing day for buffalo lovers. Buffalo milk competition organized by the Punjab Government and Buffalo Breeders Association culminated at Buffalo Research Institute (BRI) Pattoki (District Kasur).  Animal shows start after the winter andcontinue till the harsh summer takes over. Hundreds of animals participated for beauty and milk competition in this buffalo show . There are very precise rules for the show. For example, no letdown injections and no milk enhancing (injectables) allowed etc  etc. Only high producingb uffaloes participate in milk competition. Generally if a buffalo produces morethan 24litres a day (at home) is prepared for the show to produce above 30 litres a day at the show. Milk competition lasts for 72 hours. Milking is at 12-hr interval;  first two mikings for emptying the udders and last three milkings for actual milkings. The last record for this show was 47.2 litres (in 36-hrs) set by a buffalo from Multan.

This year belonged to Faisalabad.  First position holders was a Nili-Ravi buffalo from Faisalabad (owned by Mr. Nazir Gujjar) producing 47.565 litre and setting a new National (and maybe world) record. The second buffalo belonged to Rana Asif (also from Faisalabad) and it produced 47.495 litres also breaking the previous national record. The 3rd position was won by abrown Nili-Ravi buffalo that produced 44.130 litres and was also owned by Mr. Nazir Gujjar. It may be worth mentioning that the 1st and 3rd ranked buffaloes were 1st and 2nd at buffalo milk competition show organized by University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) that culminated on 2nd March and so persistency of these winners waswonderful. Cash awards, certificates, trophies and a lot of love and respect goes with winners.

For buffalo beauty lovers, both first and 2nd positions went to Rana Javed from District Faisalabad (again). At first position was a brown Nili-Ravi and at 2nd position it was black (having the name "Black Queen"). Both these buffaloes were in the first  10 positions of the milking competition as well. Breeders and politicians and tribes (brothries) again challenged each other for next year’s battles. Already, this year (on 2nd March) many challenged each other when an indigenous goat (Beetal-Faisalabadi) produced a new record of 9.04 litres at the UAF show. Next battle grounds are the Sahiwal cattle show at Jahangirabad (Distt. Khanewal) on 3-6 April and Cholistani cattle show at Jugaitpeer (Distt. Bahawalpur) on 8-11 April.

It is always very pleasant (and challenging) to be part of these healthy competitions that promote farmers and other stakeholders’ interactions etc. It helps improve utilization of indigenous breeds for conservation and development.

Please do not hesitate to contact me (by writing directly to drsajjad2@yahoo.com rather than to DAD-net) if you need more pictures or other info.

The Animal of the Future  - Now

By -  Alcides de Amorim Ramos (9/12/2014)

Buffalo -- The Light Protein Solution for the 3rd Millennium.

A high proportion of premature adult deaths (35%) can be attributed to cardiovascular illnesses and diabetes.

Buffalo food products aid in the prevention of degenerative illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, free radicals, obesity, etc.

In order to classified as "light", a product must have 25% fewer calories  -- buffalo is actually "super light" protein because it has   55% fewer calories than ox (beef).

The concept of good nutrition has been forgotten. Hippocrates said 2-1/2 thousand years ago that 90% of human illnesses "come from  the mouth"; that's still true today.

When cooking buffalo meat, always apply high heat first to force a contraction of the channels and avoid dehydration.  After this heat  can be reduced to continue cooking.  Do not apply salt just prior to cooking as this pulls out juices and dehydrates the meat. Either salt buffalo well in advance of cooking to let it absorb properly (which helps meat reabsorb moisture) or season the meat  after cooking.

Buffalo milk has two times more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) than cows milk. CLA is an anticancer substance and acts on the side effects of obesity, arteriosclerosis and diabetes.

Compared with cow's milk, buffalo milk makes nearly twice the amount of cheese and the cheese has 30% less cholesterol.

In the East, buffalo milk is used as a sexual stimulant (an aphrodisiac).

The biggest mistake made in education today is that teachers do not teach human nutrition to students. "In the truth, we learn to better feed our pigs than our children."

After the nuclear accident in Chernobyl, in the old Soviet Union, buffalo milk was the food that more quickly eliminated radioactivity residues, as so is considered a strategic food in the case of nuclear catastrophes.

Buffalo International Conference 2013

“Buffalo and human welfare”

Faculty of Animal Science, Hasanuddin University, Makassar, Indonesia, 4-5 Nov. 2013

Indonesia Hasanuddin University of Makassar, South Sulawesi, organized a Buffalo International

Conference on November 4-5, 2013 on the theme “Buffalo and human welfare”. Prof. Asmuddin Natsir,

the President of the Buffalo International Conference, on November, welcomed all the

delegates coming from many countries, underlining the pivotal role of buffalo in several communities

of Indonesia as producer of milk, meat and draft, particularly in Tana Toraja where spotted buffalo is in high

demand and in expensive cost for the link with traditional culture and ceremonies. Prof. Syamsuddin Hasan,

the Dean of Faculty of Animal Science in Makassar, showed the activity of his University and confirmed that the main

goal of the Conference is to find strategic solutions to develop buffalo population in Indonesia, as buffalo is

one of the main meat sources after beef, but buffalo population dramatically decreased in last years.

Dr. Rusman Heriawan, Vice Minister of Agriculture, expressed the problem of buffalo population decreasing,

as one million head disappeared in ten years (1995-2005), in 2011 there were 1.3 million buffaloes in Indonesia,

today buffaloes are less than one million. He asked why, as Indonesia is emerging country with 250 million people,

asking more food including high quality beef. The first presentation, in Plenary Session 1, was by

Prof. Antonio Borghese (Italy), who gave as gift his new book “Buffalo Livestock and Products” to

Prof. Asmuddin Natsir and to Prof. Suhubdy, who invited him to the Conference. Afterwards prof. Borghese

replied to the Vice Minister that buffalo population in Indonesia decreased because of no national plan was

effected for development of buffalo, suggesting to create a National Buffalo Research Centre,

involving all the Indonesian scientist working in the field, apply the crossbreeding with dairy

purpose breed to spread out the milk and meat market, as Swamp animals have no economic

future with the increase of mechanization, as he proposed to Indonesia Authorities from 2004.

Prof. Borghese, in his presentation, showed the same phenomenon in Europe, where countries as

Italy increased buffalo population, products and  market, creating a dairy purpose breed as

Mediterranean Italian, producing until 5000 litres milk in 270 days of lactation, that are quite all

processed in mozzarella cheese, luxurious and well paid product in the international market. On

the contrary, other countries as Romania, Hungary, Greece, Macedonia, where buffalo was

a draft animal producing only 800 litres milk for lactation, looked at the drastic decreasing of

population as mechanization took away the function to buffalo, until the real risk of

extinction of the species in these countries. The solution is to apply the crossbreeding with

Mediterranean Italian to produce again an economic buffalo with dairy purpose capacities.

Dr. Oswin Perera (Sri Lanka) underlined as buffalo is a multi-purpose animal, providing in

Asia milk, meat, draught power and manure for crop agriculture, surviving in stressful

environments, feeding poor quality forages. He said that anyway is possible to introduce

improved technologies to smallholders farmers in breeding, reproduction and nutrition.

Prof. Yasuhiro Kawamoto (Japan) showed the reality of buffalo population in Okinawa (91

head) used to draw carts to take the visitors from one island to another one.

Prof. Suhubdy (University of Mataram, Indonesian Buffalo Information Centre) spoke

about the obstacles, opportunities and challenges of buffalo production and research in Indonesia.

Considerable developmental strategies were formulated in order to improve buffalo

population and products.

Prof. Baharuddin Tappa (Indonesian Institute of Sciences, Bogor, Indonesia) presented the major

reproductive problems affecting buffalo as late maturity, long postpartum anoestrus, poor

expression of oestrus, poor conception rates, long calving intervals. He showed reproduction

technologies to increase pregnancy rate and fertility. The Plenary Session 2, on November 5,

was open by Dr. Libertado Cruz (Director of the Philippine Carabao Center), who spoke about the

possibility and the convenience to transform Asia Swamp buffaloes to important producers of milk

and meat. He showed the long experience in the Philippine Carabao Center, where Bulgarian and

Indian Murrah, Nili Ravi and Mediterranean Italian animals and semen were imported to

apply wide-scale crossbreeding on Philippine Swamp buffaloes and backcrossing generation

after generation. The new buffaloes produce more milk and meat and benefit millions of

farming families. Dr. Hamidreza Naderfard (National Animal Breeding Center, Iran)

explained the role of buffalo to develop rural areas, not only in economic terms, but also for

cultural and social problems. Prof. Toban Batosamma (Hasanuddin University, Makassar)

spoke about the social aspects of spotted buffalo for Torajan culture. Many buffaloes are normally

slaughtered during the burial ceremony by the Torajan people for the believed purpose of

keeping the spirits at peace and to ensure the spirits safety in the afterworld. The cost of

spotted buffalo is very high, sustaining a rich local economy. Dr. Winugroho (Indonesian

Research Institute for Animal Production, Ciawi) presented the problems of feed availability to

support buffalo development in Indonesia. Afterwards oral presentations followed and a

round table was organized to discuss the future strategies in Indonesia to support buffalo

development and products.

A Committee was created with Prof. Borghese, Dr. Cruz, Prof. Suhubdy, Prof. Asmuddin Natsir,

Prof. Baharuddin Tappa and other scientists, to formulate recommendations to the Ministry of

Agriculture to resolve the declining of buffalo population as following:

1, to found the Indonesia Buffalo Centre in Sunbawa;

2, to establish a National and autonomic Regency of the Centre with a large Committee;

3, National buffalo projects will be presented by the Centre;

4, the Indonesian Buffalo Association and the Regency will be linked to the International Buffalo Federation;

5, the Makassar declaration will be written and pursued.

Prof. Antonio Borghese

IRAQI MICROSALLITES GENETICS STUDY (1)

Showed that, Iraqi buffalo originated in Iraq, not imported from India as Indian theory claimed, and

there are three main clusters: the first one included Basra, Baghdad and Al-Qadisyia, the second

included Kirkuk and Missan while the third included Babylon and Mosul, with the highest

polymorphism.

INDIAN MOLECULAR GENETICS STUDY (2)

Showed that the data are consistent with the available archeological information in supporting the

proposition that the river buffalo was likely to be domesticated in the western Region of the Indian

subcontinent, in addition we found obtained time estimate of 6300 years for the expansion of one set

of heliotypes of the Indian domestic buffalo.

ITALIAN MOLECULAR GENETIC STUDY, (3)

According to results indicate that the introduction of water buffalo breeding and rice farming,

most likely from the Indian subcontinent, only marginal by affected the gene pool of autochthonous

people of the region furthermore, a prevalent middle eastern ancestry of the modern population of the

marshes of southern Iraq implies that if the Marsh Arabs (Ma"dan ) are descendent of ancient

Sumerians, also the Sumerians were most likely autochthonous and not of Indian or south Asian

ancestry.

Conclusions

The Indian and Italian molecular Genetic studies (2,3) supported the archeological theory of Sousa

(12) that our buffalo had Indian subcontinent origin, while recently microsatellites Iraqi Jaayd (1)

theory of Iraqi buffalo originated in Iraq, not imported from India, supporting the two archeological

theories of Cockrill and Zeuner (10,11) but we need phylogeographic study to estimate the duration of

buffalo domestication and the exact home tract that was come from. Still an open question till we will

doing more researches in future.

World milk production has doubled in the last few decades. The last few years have also witnessed a consistent increase in the

organized production of milk and meat from buffalo. Buffalo milk, its dairy derivatives, and buffalo meat, are cherished and

relished by young and old alike. Buffalo farming is now an almost worldwide phenomenon.

Gene secrets now unlocked

Revitalizing livestock a possibility

BANGLADESH has one of the largest buffalo populations in South Asia. However, with modernization of farming techniques, the venerable buffalo is no longer the mainstay on our fields. The recent discovery of the complete genome of the water buffalo by two institutions, Lal Teer Livestock and Beijing Genomics Institute has however opened up a whole set of new possibilities for this animal. It is now wholly possible to develop superior breeds of buffalo, with the potential of inducting them as dairy animals for milk production or to repopulate livestock population. We wholly welcome this latest discovery in the field of genetics.
The importance of the buffalo cannot be understated. Though only 30 per cent of the cattle population is buffalo, the animal contributes 60 per cent of total milk production in the country. Meat and protein are both vital proteins for the general population. Having access to the gene pool of the buffalo could open up new research to repopulation of the water buffalo. Looking beyond the protein factor, there are significant economic gains to be made from such discovery. Needless to say, the private sector which is now heavily involved in commercial farming and dairy will be hugely interested in making required investments in further research and development to develop superior breeds. It is of paramount importance that this discovery is patented immediately, which once gotten could earn significant royalty when used internationally. One cannot forget that India earns somewhere in the vicinity of US$2billion in annual royalty from patents.

(NaturalNews) The environment, humans and now the cattle raised for food -- the horror that is glyphosate apparently

knows no bounds, as a new study out of Denmark shows that dairy cows everywhere are now being harmed by the

pervasive agricultural poison. According to this latest indictment of the Monsanto-owned chemical, glyphosate,

the primary active ingredient in Roundup herbicide, was identified in 100 percent of urine samples collected

from dairy cows all across Denmark, the health implications of which are immensely sobering for both

the animals and humans.

Beneficial impact on cardiovascular risk profile of water buffalo meat consumption.

Giordano G, Guarini P, Ferrari P, Biondi-Zoccai G, Schiavone B, Giordano A.

Angiology Unit, Villa dei Fiori Hospital, Acerra (NA), Italy. ggiord@libero.it

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Meat is a good source of proteins and irons, yet its consumption has been associated with unfavorable cardiovascular effects. Whether this applies to all types of meat is unclear. We thus aimed to appraise the impact of water buffalo meat consumption on cardiovascular risk profile with an observational longitudinal study.

SUBJECTS/METHODS: Several important cardiovascular risk features were appraised at baseline and at 12-month follow-up in 300 adult subjects divided in groups: recent consumers of water buffalo meat vs subjects who had never consumed water buffalo meat. In addition, long-standing consumers of water buffalo meat were evaluated.

RESULTS: Age, gender, height, body weight, and the remaining diet (with the exception of cow meat consumption) were similar across groups. From baseline to follow-up, recent consumers of water buffalo meat change their intake of water buffalo meat from none to 600+/-107 g per week (P<0.001), with ensuing reductions in cow meat consumption from 504+/-104 to 4+/-28 (P<0.001). At the end of the study, recent consumers of water buffalo meat showed a significant decrease in total cholesterol and triglycerides levels, lower pulse wave velocity, as well as a more blunted response to oxidative stress from baseline to follow-up in comparison with subjects who had never consumed water buffalo meat (all P<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS: Consumption of buffalo meat seems to be associated with several beneficial effects on cardiovascular risk profile. Awaiting further randomized clinical trials, this study suggests that a larger consumption of water buffalo meat could confer significant cardiovascular benefits, while continuing to provide a substantial proportion of the recommended daily allowance of protein.
